In 2011, the LAUSD was awarded a competitive federal Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) grant.  Spanning 7 years with $21 million dollars – LAUSD’s GEAR UP 4 LA was one of only 60 grants awarded nationally.  The grant is a college preparation program that works with students, parents and schools to increase student success in high school, persistence in college and preparation for life-long learning. We do this by working collaboratively with families, colleges and universities, community organizations and businesses, to promote a college-going culture.

Our grant was written for middle and high schools within the Belmont and Kennedy Zones of Choice only. We are based out of the ISIC and serve the high needs urban Pico Union and surrounding neighborhood.  GU4LA will serve 2 cohorts totaling 4,000 students beginning in middle school, through high school graduation and into the first year of college.
